How to Think About Trench Drain Size

Channel size should be selected from project conditions, not copied from a single previous installation.

Start with the incoming water

Identify the source, approximate flow, wash-down practice and how quickly water needs to leave the area.

Check available construction depth

Floor build-up, slab level, waterproofing and outlet location can constrain the drain depth. A dimension that looks acceptable on paper may be impractical once the outlet and fabrication details are included.

Plan outlets before finalizing the channel

Outlet diameter, number, location and downstream pipework all affect how the channel performs.

Consider load and cover style

Pedestrian traffic, carts or heavier service conditions influence grating and support requirements.

Prepare a drawing

For custom systems, a simple plan and section showing length, width, depth, outlets, corners, floor levels and nearby equipment is often more useful than a text description alone.
